Short answer
We analysed 983 unique competitor reviews of bike locks, lights, pumps and stands collected from Amazon listings. The most frequent negative themes are not theft resistance. They are mechanisms that will not open, charging faults, parts that fail after several weeks, and dimensions that do not match the listing. This page documents the sample and the method so that every number on it can be recalculated.
As at: 2026-11-04 (AEDT). This is a corpus text analysis, not a defect rate, a market survey or a product test.
Method
- Eight retailer review exports were supplied as spreadsheets.
- Rows were deduplicated on the retailer review id; one file was an exact duplicate of another.
- The retained fields include rating, date, country, product category, verbatim title and body, and derived pain / praise tags.
- Counts below are simple text or field matches. No sentiment model, weighting or inference is used.
- Two sources were excluded from comparative claims: the country field mixes Amazon AU, amazon.com and amazon.in reviews, and the sampling paths differ between them.

Findings that can be quoted
- Of 983 unique reviews, 416 are from Amazon AU and 536 from amazon.com, so this is not an Australia-only dataset.
- The share of 1–2 star reviews is 21.2% in the AU subset and 41.2% in the US subset. Because the two subsets were sampled differently, these rates are not comparable and should not be read as a quality difference between markets.
- Failure timing is the clearest pattern: positive reviews describe products as sturdy, cheap and easy to use, while negative reviews describe products that stopped working after several weeks. Praise and complaint vocabularies barely overlap.
- Several low-star reviews describe a dimension measured on the delivered product that did not match the image. Listing dimensions should be verified on the physical item.
Limitations
- Reviews describe competitor products, not ours. No competitor brand is named in our own product claims.
- Review exports carry no verified defect diagnosis; a complaint is a report, not a measurement.
- The country field reflects the marketplace of the review link, not necessarily the reviewer’s residence.
- No search-volume, sales or return-rate data is included. No causal claim is made.
Data dictionary and reproduction
The machine-readable corpus and the recalculation script live in the site’s internal content repository. Fields: review id, marketplace, ASIN, variant, category, rating, date, country, verbatim title, verbatim body, derived tags, word count and evidence grade. Every count on this page is a field match against that table.
