A practical bike lock capability ladder

How we organise locks by construction and parking situation. An internal framework, not a security rating or test result.

Short answer

This site organises its own lock and light products into six levels, L0 to L5, based on construction and intended parking situation. It is an internal content framework to help a reader navigate between products. It is not a security certification, it is not a test result, and it is not comparable to a third-party rating.

As at: 2026-11-04 (AEDT). No independent cut, grind or attack testing was performed.

The ladder

Level Product class Example from our range Construction signal Typical situation
L0 Bike lights Rechargeable Bike Light Set T22 8+10 modes / IP64 / front and rear Night visibility and road-rule compliance; not a security device
L0 Bike lights Rechargeable Bike Light Set Q6 300LM front / 50LM rear / IPX6 Night visibility; brightness step up from the T22
L1 Keyed locks 5-Digit Cable Lock 65cm (5 Colours + Twin Pack) 65cm cable / 5-digit code / 5 colours Short stops in low-risk areas, locking accessories, second lock
L1 Keyed locks Keyed Cable Lock Brass cylinder / 2 keys supplied / braided steel No code to remember; alternative to a combination lock
L2 Combination locks 5-Digit Resettable Cable Lock 120cm 120cm / 5-digit resettable / braided steel core Daily commuting; long enough for frame plus one wheel
L2 Combination locks 4-Digit Combination Cable Lock 103cm 103cm / 4-digit / triple-braided high-tensile core Daily commuting (digit and length comparison with P03)
L3 Keyed locks 5-Digit Combination Chain Lock 1m 6mm hardened steel chain / 1m / fabric sleeve / 5-digit Medium-to-high risk, longer stops; higher cut resistance
L4 U-locks Heavy Duty U-Lock 19mm with Cable 19mm shackle / double locking / silicone sleeve / cable included Overnight and high-risk city parking; our highest theft resistance
X1 Kickstands Adjustable Alloy Kickstand 33-38cm 33-38cm / 20-27.5in / 451-650C Parking and storage; pairs with a lock for park-then-lock
X2 Pumps High Pressure Mini Pump 32cm Presta/Schrader/Dunlop / high-pressure barrel Pre-ride check; pairs with lights for commuting prep
X2 Pumps Mini Hand Pump 32cm Presta/Schrader/Dunlop / portable As above; high-pressure versus portable comparison with P07
X2 Pumps Floor Pump with Gauge 160 PSI 160 PSI / pressure gauge / 45cm Home maintenance; highest price, not currently available

L0 is visibility and non-security equipment. L1 to L3 increase reach and material resistance. L4 is a rigid shackle locking at both ends. L5 is a two-lock combination, which addresses a different problem: securing the frame and a wheel to a fixed object at the same time.

Third-party rating systems

Independent schemes such as Sold Secure (UK), ART (Netherlands), and manufacturer scales used by Kryptonite and ABUS classify products against defined attack tests. Those classifications belong to the certifying body and are awarded to specific tested models. We do not reproduce their thresholds here, because a summary written without checking each scheme’s current published criteria would be unreliable. If you need a certified product, check the certifier’s own database for the exact model.

No product on this site is described as holding any of these ratings.

Why the top of our ladder is not the buying default

Inventory and evidence do not line up. In the product snapshot used for this page, the highest-volume line is a short 65cm cable, while the rigid shackle and chain products have far fewer units. Our review corpus also shows that buyers repeatedly complain about short cables that cannot reach a frame, a wheel and a rack together. For that reason our articles use the rigid lock as an explanatory anchor and link to whichever product is actually available, rather than pushing every reader toward the top of the ladder.

How to use this page

  1. Decide how long the bike will be left and where.
  2. Choose the level that matches that situation, not the highest level.
  3. Check the measurable specification on the product page.
  4. Confirm frame, wheel and rack can all be secured with the length available.

Frequently asked questions

Is L5 more secure than L4?

L5 describes a two-device combination, not a higher rating. It solves reach and coverage problems; it does not claim a longer resistance time against a tool.

Are your products Sold Secure rated?

No. We do not claim any third-party security rating. Our ladder is a navigation aid for our own catalogue only.

Why not publish a Best Locks ranking?

A ranking implies comparative testing. We do not run a test programme, so we publish decision guidance and verifiable specifications instead.

Our buying guides cover shackle lengths, lumen claims and valve types — the details the spec table never explains.
